Park District police officers at Tyler Barn in Rocky River Reservation in 1939. The title "police" was officially changed to "ranger" in 1967. Click here to learn more about the history of the Ranger Department.


A ranger leads a tour of the museum at Ranger Headquarters in Rocky River Reservation. The museum displays photographs, uniforms, artifacts, and equipment utilized throughout the years. Groups may schedule a tour of Ranger Headquarters by contacting the public information specialist.


Mounted Unit rangers at the Lincoln Memorial during National Police Week in Washington, D.C. The Mounted Unit is highly-regarded, and has represented Ohio law enforcement in two presidential inaugural parades.


A Bike Patrol Team ranger educates students on bicycle laws and safety. Certified police mountain bike rangers patrol off-road areas of Cleveland Metroparks that are not easily accessible in a cruiser.


A ranger briefs Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members during a search and rescue training exercise in Mill Stream Run Reservation. Rangers share their expertise with many community organizations and agencies.


Rangers display the department's uniforms. The Ranger Department won the national award for Best Dressed Law Enforcement Agency, and was featured in Law and Order magazine.


A K-9 Unit ranger discusses the role of the police canine in the Park District. The Ranger Department's state and nationally-certified canines are used to locate missing persons, apprehend fleeing suspects, and detect illegal drugs in Cleveland Metroparks.


Honor Guard rangers participate in a dedication ceremony at Memorial Park in Rocky River Reservation. The Honor Guard has represented the Park District and Ranger Department at events including Cleveland's Saint Patrick's Day Parade, the Gold Cup Horse Show, and the Greater Cleveland and Ohio Peace Officer Memorial ceremonies.

Rangers serve their award-winning, non-alcoholic "mocktail" at the Annual Holiday Mocktail Party sponsored by the Safe Kids/Safe Communities Greater Cleveland Coalition. Rangers are involved in many community outreach programs, and promote safety and crime prevention to hundreds-of-thousands of Greater Clevelanders each year.

 

A ranger conducts youth fingerprinting at the annual Headquarters open house.

 

“Major,” a draft cross horse and 17-year veteran of Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department, was decommissioned recently and accepted by The Right Lead agency in Medina.  The Right Lead offers at-risk children opportunities to develop trust, responsibility, self-esteem, team work, and good communication skills.  (Pictured L – R: Tammy Collins, The Right Lead Executive Director, Ranger Randy Skalsky and Sergeant Richard Svoboda of the Mounted Unit)
