Recycling is as Simple as a Visit to the Park

When you visit Cleveland Metroparks or Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, you can recycle too! With two recycling programs – one for paper and the other for ink jet and toner cartridges – the Park District is inviting visitors to participate in our mission of conserving natural resources.

Paper Recycling in Cleveland Metroparks
The Paper Retriever® program was established in partnership with Abitibi-Consolidated, a world leader in newspaper and magazine recycling. This is an easy program to participate in. Simply place both your personal and office waste paper into brightly-colored yellow and green Paper Retriever® bins located in 13 Cleveland Metroparks reservations and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (see below for locations).

Essentially any paper product can be recycled and placed in the Paper Retriever® bins, including: office paper, newspaper, construction paper, magazines, catalogs, shredded paper (contained in plastic bags), junk mail, notebooks, books, and writing tablets.

Items that cannot be recycled are: phone books, cardboard (of any type), plastics, glass, metals, and trash. (Please note that phone books can be recycled in Cleveland Metroparks in June and July of each year during the Phone Book Recycling Campaign.)

Once paper is collected it will be 100% recycled and made into newsprint that can be reused as paper products. The Paper Retriever® program not only recycles paper, but also helps generate money for Cleveland Metroparks. For every ton of paper collected, Abitibi gives Cleveland Metroparks $15. Money raised will be used to fund future Park District recycling initiatives and Zoo education programs.

Ink Jet and Laser Toner Cartridge Recycling

Cleveland Metroparks second new recycling program offers you a simple way to recycle ink jet and laser toner cartridges. With the help of a company called Collect Inc., you can drop off your ink jet and toner cartridges to be reconditioned, recycled and reused.

Cartridge collection boxes have been set up throughout the Park District. Locations include: nature centers, golf pro shops, and The RainForest at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Cleveland Metroparks also has available pre-paid postage bags for the ink jet cartridges, which you can pick up from area nature centers. You can then mail your cartridges from home to the recycling center, at no cost.

Toner and ink jet cartridges are cleaned, reconditioned and reused twice. After that, the parts are recycled. Rest assured that every cartridge received will be recycled, even if Collect Inc. cannot recycle it. They will find someone who can. Similar to the Paper Retriever® program, the toner recycling program generates money for the Park District. For every ink jet and toner cartridge that can be recycled, Cleveland Metroparks gets $2, with proceeds going to future recycling initiatives.
