Cleveland Metroparks 2012 Summer Camps

Hike in the woods, wade in a creek, create a craft, paddle a kayak, sketch an animal, or play a game. This summer, spend time with a naturalist exploring the outdoor world around you. A variety of summer camps for kids are offered throughout Cleveland Metroparks, each packed full of adventurous activities.

Registration begins April 17 at 9:30 a.m. for Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township residents.

Registration begins April 24 at 9:30 a.m. for all other participants.

  • Registration is required for all camps. Only telephone registration will be permitted. 
  • Campers may register for one camp per telephone call. To register, call the appropriate phone number listed with each camp.
  • Camp fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Brecksville Reservation 

Camp Brecksville
Hey kids! Join naturalists as we explore Brecksville Reservation in search of the many plants and animals that call this reservation home. We will spend three days in the forest, creek and prairie. Plan for hiking, crafts, games and fun!

Primitive Survival Skills Camp
Are you a survivor?  Learn what to put in your survival kit, make a fire without matches, build an emergency shelter and cook outdoors using a Dutch oven.  You will spend three hands-on days working on your survival skills.

Brookside Reservation 

Brookside Explorers
It is time for a three day adventure through the forest, fields, wetlands, and creeks of Brookside Reservation. We will investigate the P.A.R.T.S. (plants, animals, rocks, trash, soils) of each ecosystem we explore. Join the excitement of traveling over the land, testing the wind, and getting our feet wet in the water.

Garfield Park/Bedford Reservations 

Camp Garfield
Join naturalists from Garfield Park Nature Center on an exciting adventure to learn all about water!  We will explore creeks, ponds, waterfalls, and even forests to see how water affects us all.  Come prepared to explore, play games, make crafts, and meet new friends.

Hinckley Reservation 

Camp Hinckley
Kids…are you ready for three days of adventure and fun? You will have the opportunity to try your hand at orienteering, fishing, kayaking, fire building and more at Camp Hinckley.

Youth Kayaking and SUP Camp
Have fun on the water learning two new sports. We’ll explore nature from a new perspective as you learn to “walk on water” standup paddleboard (SUP) style, then devote some time learning how to kayak. Be prepared to get wet as you learn paddle strokes, etiquette, and safety.  Please bring a packed lunch.

North Chagrin Reservation

Nature-N-Art Camp
Creative expression is a wonderful way for campers to enhance their sense of awareness in nature. Children will spend the week exploring the habitats and animals of North Chagrin Reservation with daily activities, games and crafts.

Preschool Discovery Camp
Start off every morning with great fun in North Chagrin Reservation! Your little one will kick off each day discovering nature through fun stories, games, crafts and other activities. Campers must be potty trained.

Outdoor Adventure Camp
Does your child come home dirty or wet from head to toe after playing outdoors? If yes, this camp’s for them. Children will get down and dirty exploring North Chagrin Reservation with pond dipping, creek walks, orienteering and other outdoor activities.

Biology Camp for Teens
The great outdoors will be our classroom to study the lives of reptiles, amphibians and other animals using the scientific method. Join biologists and field naturalists for outdoor activities and experiments to help teens learn how science can reveal answers.

Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation

Let's Explorer CanalWay
Join our Naturalist for an adventure to see what we can find in our park.  Be prepared to discover the Metroparks in a new way.  We will do crafts, read stories, play games and go on hikes.  Be ready to explore and have fun!

Ages: 3 - 5*           August 7 - 9

CanalWay Camper
We will spend the next three days discovering the skills of an extreme camper through fun and games.  We will setup tents, use a compass, build a fire, hike, and fish. Be ready to get dirty exploring as we master the art of camping.

CanalWay Adventure Camp
We will spend three days doing different recreational activities. Learn about backpacking, fishing, and biking. You must provide your own bike and know how to ride it for bike day.

Native American Experience Camp
Campers will spend three days in the past learning about local Native Americans.  Children will have the opportunity to practice skills such as atlatling, pottery, and cordage making as well as campfires, games and hiking.

CanalWay Nature Explorers
Get ready for three fun filled days of exploration at the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation. We will play games and activities that are based around the local wildlife. Our time will be spent tracking deer, watching for birds, pond netting for turtles and frogs, and searching the fields for insects.

Rocky River Reservation

Preschool Nature Camp
Let’s explore the forest, river and ponds that are a part of the Rocky River Valley. We will search high and low to discover the critters that make this valley their home.  We will walk the trails, play games, get dirty and have fun! Campers must be potty trained.

Primitive Camp Skills
Join Naturalist Kathy Schmidt and local experts to learn primitive skills. Start a fire with flint and steel, build a debris shelter, and find your way with a map and compass. Participants must come all 3 days.

Birds, Bats, Bugs and Worms
Join Naturalist Min Keung for three days of big fun! Go on an insect and worm safari, scout for birds, and look for our resident bats. Play games, get outside, and have fun.

Park Teensters
It’s time for youth aged 11-14 to help the park. We will make a new trail and work on others, but spend part of our day having fun.

Snakes, Turtles and Frogs
Kids get up-close and personal during this three-day outdoor exploration into the lives of reptiles and amphibians. We’ll search the forest, pond, and river habitats for live specimens and enjoy a variety of crafts, games, and activities. Long pants and sturdy shoes recommended; packed lunch and a canteen required.

Wildlife Exploration
Discover animals that live in the forest, field, and pond. Get outside, explore, discover and have fun!

South Chagrin Reservation

 

Chipmunk Camp
This three-day day camp at Look About Lodge will lead young children to nature discovery through exploration of special places, play in nature, games, crafts and more! The final day of camp will held at our Arboretum.

Ages: 5 - 6                        June 26 - 28

Night Camp
Teens will love exploring South Chagrin Reservation as day fades into night at Night Camp. We’ll cook a meal outdoors and explore the night through forest and creek. Bring water shoes if you have them.

Creature Camp
This three-day day camp will be fun for nature-lovers as we explore creatures in the world around us. We’ll search for life in the forests, fields, ponds and streams of South Chagrin while enjoying all the good things camp has to offer.

Artsploration
In this more-arts-than-crafts camp, we’ll hike the trails of South Chagrin and let nature inspire our artwork. Participants will be provided with take-home supplies to continue their creativity.

Nature Quest Camp
During this three-day day camp, we’ll combine our senses, clues, mapping and technology to lead us through the land and water of South Chagrin on a fun summer quest.

Water Camp
Kids at this three-day camp will follow the water that falls as rain on South Chagrin and travels through stream and river. Like the water, we’ll end up at Lake Erie on Thursday as we take a field trip to Fairport Harbor.

Nature-Garten
Children getting ready to enter kindergarten will enjoy having fun and discovering in nature at Look About Lodge. Our motto for the week: No Going Home Clean!

Wendy Park/Rivergate Park

Youth Watersports Camp
Splish, splash…I’m kayaking down the Cuyahoga?  Learn to kayak, standup paddleboard and row; build a boat using only cardboard and duck tape; and make your own water quality monitoring system. Spend the first two days of camp at Wendy Park on the water then join us at Rivergate Park, along the Cuyahoga River, learning to row with our partners at the Cleveland Rowing Foundation. We’ll row, kayak and participate in water quality experiments in the Cuyahoga River our last two days of camp. Please bring a packed lunch.

Junior Golf Day Camp
(ages 8 - 17)

Registration begins immediately. This five-day camp for young golfers will include instruction, etiquette, rules, playing and on-course experiences. Juniors should bring a packed lunch. Optional lunch provided at Seneca for $25/week. Extended care is available for children arriving at 8 a.m. and staying until 5 p.m. A fee of $25 covers extended care for the entire week. There are no scholarships available for Junior Golf Day Camp. $200/week
