Cleveland Metroparks Junior High Team Golf League

Procedures | Rules

Cleveland Metroparks has team golf competition for boys and girls in the 6th to 8th grades.  Any organization, including schools, youth groups, churches, or even a neighborhood may form a team.

There will be six events in this 9–hole tournament series which will be scheduled between April 14 and May 19 on Saturday afternoons starting at 3:30pm at Cleveland Metroparks Golf Courses.  A schedule should be available by April 5.  There will be team winners at each event and a championship at the conclusion of the series (May 19).

Teams will consist of 4 to 8 players with one or two adult coaches.  A team score will be created using the 4 lowest scores, so it will be beneficial to have more than 4 players.  Coaches may play along with the team or just supervise; whatever is appropriate for the team.  Age appropriate rules will be applied to the matches. Boys and girls will probably compete together unless there are sufficient numbers of teams of both genders to allow for separate competitions.

Teams will be required to provide their own nickname and uniforms.  Teams are encouraged to be creative with uniforms, keeping them simple and inexpensive (i.e. red cap, navy blue shirt) or to be as elaborate as you like.

Schools/organizations can field more than one team if there is interest.  A minimum of 4 players and a maximum 8 players are permitted on each team. Golfers will pay green fees upon arrival at the course.  Pull carts may be used or rented. There will be a $25 administrative fee for each team for the season.  Green fees vary at each course but the fees will be actually lower this season since the junior discount fee will now be in effect on Saturday and Sunday afternoons after 2 p.m. at all Cleveland Metroparks golf courses.

The deadline to register a team is April 1st.  For questions or concerns, please call Jeff Staker, Golf Professional and Manager of Special Events and Instruction, at 216-641-8633.

Registration form

Procedures

1. Teams, players, should arrive at least one half hour prior to the starting time to stretch, warm-up, putt, etc., and pay appropriate fees so all are ready to go prior to the first starting time. Just as in high school golf, players may walk and carry or walk and pull a cart. (Note; there are cases where players with a physical handicap may receive prearranged permission to ride a cart.)
2.

Players should wear appropriate clothing and have slacks, shorts, or skirts with pockets. Players should carry tees, ball markers, divot repair tool, scorecard, and pencil so they are organized and ready for their round.

3. Whenever possible, in a “dual” match (two teams), two players from Team A shall play with 2 players from Team B. On the first hole, the two visitors shall tee off first. After the first hole, “honors’ should be used, but if a player is not prepared, then play “ready” golf. In a “tri” match (three teams), play will be in 3-somes, made up of one player from each team.
4. Coaches should try to put their players in order by ability so players are matched by skill level as best as possible. The better, faster, or more experience players should be put out first.
5. Scorecards shall be exchanged.  A player from Team A shall keep the score for a player from Team B. Upon completion of the round, the scorecard should be checked and totaled and signed by both the player and the scorer. Then the score card shall be turned in to the coaches.
6. The “home” coach shall be responsible for accumulating and recording the scores of a match on a score sheet provided by email.  The home coach shall also tally the scores (lowest four scores) and determine and announce the results.  The “home” coach also has the responsibility of sending the scores (team & all individual) to Jeff Staker by email or by fax (216-641-1865).  The host golf course can help with this. Jeff will accumulate team records and league standings.
7. Some additional coaches’ duties: Based on availability, each team will receive one complimentary cart for the coach or coaches to ride the golf course to monitor play.  Coaches shall help with rules and to assist groups maintain a good pace of play. The pace of play on a regulation course is 15 minutes per hole.  On a short course, as “Junior High Team Golf” is using, the pace is about 13 minutes per hole. It is recommended for at least the first two weeks that coaches do not play golf, but are out on the course monitoring the play.  If things go well, later in the season, coaches may be able to play along with the teams.  Currently coaches would have to pay a greens fee if they are going to play golf.

rules

1. In general, USGA and OHSAA rules will be in effect with the exceptions listed below.
2.

Play is from the following tee colors:

Shawnee Hills Par 3:  All play from the only tees (gold)
              Mastick Woods & Little Met:  Boys-Gold         Girls-Orange
              Washington:  Boys-Black        Girls-Orange
              Seneca:   TBA

3. Preferred Lies rules will be in effect.  A ball that is lying in its “own” fairway may be lifted, cleaned, & placed a maximum of one club length not nearer the hole (must be kept in the fairway).  The closely mown fringes around the greens are considered fairway.  A ball lying in the rough or in a fairway of a hole not being played, must be played as it lies.
4. The maximum allowable score is 9 strokes per player per hole.  Once that score is inevitable, players shall pick up and take a score of 9 for that hole.  It is critical to keep play moving with a good pace of play.
5. In this competition, there will be no need to hit a provisional ball.  If a ball is hit into a hazard, out of bounds, or lost:  A replacement ball shall be dropped within 2 club lengths from the point of entry into the trouble area or within 2 club lengths of where the ball has been estimated to be lost.  One penalty stroke shall be added to the score.  It is critical to keep play moving with a good pace of play.
6. Team Competition:  The 4 lowest scores from individuals from each team will apply to the team score.  The team with lower total from those 4 scores, wins the match. In case of a tie, the 5th score from each team shall be compared and so on until the tie is broken. If it ever comes to this, in the tiebreaker, where one team has a player and the other team does not have a player to match that score;  the team with the player would be declared the winner.
7.

In case of questions, problems, disputes, etc., the coaches shall confer and try to resolve issues.  If issues cannot be resolved, the “home” coach will have the final authority.
